On the desk in front of me are two books, both in Russian. One is “The House of Government” by Yuri

Tynyanov, and the other is “Memoirs” by Boris Pasternak. I worked as a translator for both of them. Mr .

Pasternak was the greatest Russian writer in the twentieth century.

There is a framed photo of two little girls on the balcony of Ivan Bunin. Tynyanov and the poet, Bunin,

were neighbors in Moscow in the pre-revolutionary years.

Behind the photo are nine volumes of Pushkin’s collected works . They are in a bronze bookcase.

Immediately in front of the photo are three Russian encyclopedias and a volume of Pushkin’s poetry.

Looking over to the right is an enormous bronze statue of Pushkin.

I am sitting between numerous paintings, mostly portraits of artistic figures and national heroes.

Off to the right is my desk. It takes up almost the entire room . I only have one room in the

house I rent.

I made this biggest bid I’ve ever made in history of my life a couple of years ago when I was

living in East LA, a crime infested ghetto. I put every penny I had into a parcel of land and a fixer

upper house at the time. With famous American crooners singing a song called ‘buy real estate,’

was it even possible to be safe?

In addition, I had previously been scammed by real estate companies in LA and other western

cities. These fake agents had sold me a piece of non-existent land......
